Dennis and Shelagh Watson have always had a passion for supporting vulnerable individuals. Drawing from their own life challenges, they have consistently opened their hearts and home to those in need, often providing shelter and essential resources. Their children, Reagan, Denny, and Jeremy, grew up witnessing these acts of kindness throughout the 1980s and 90s. Inspired by these experiences, the Watson family established the Soaring Eagle Support Society (SESS) in 2019, transforming their informal efforts into an incorporated family charity foundation.
Initially, SESS operated as a drop-in outreach center in downtown Whitecourt, offering crucial services such as a mailing address, assistance with obtaining identification, access to bathrooms, showers, laundry facilities, tax processing, legal advocacy, healthcare facilitation, and basic nourishment. These services proved especially vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2019, SESS formalized its mission by becoming a Non-Profit Organization under Alberta’s Societies Act.
In June 2021, SESS expanded its reach by leasing Whitecourt’s Alaskan Hotel from its generous owner. This facility, named Eagle Nest, was converted into a transitional, supported residential facility for the homeless and underhoused. The Watson family, along with volunteers, practicum students, and hired staff, worked tirelessly to prepare the facility. Sixteen residents moved in immediately, and with the aid of grants, more residents and support services were gradually added.
Despite financial challenges following the end of COVID-related funding, the dedication and passion of the SESS team and volunteers have sustained the organization. Although the scope of services had to be narrowed, Eagle Nest continues to provide shelter and minimal support services. The sense of community and mutual care among residents remains strong, with many expressing their gratitude for the stability and support provided by Eagle Nest.
During the third year of operation, SESS spent a year revising policy and procedures with the aid of consultant Ed Marshak. A comprehensive three-year Strategic Plan was developed. Key outcomes prioritize Maintenance and Repair, Case Management, and Landlord Link programming. These efforts establish a sustainable pathway forward to continue providing these services.
